The exam usually takes 15-30 minutes, depending on what body part(s) is being scanned. You'll be asked to remove eyeglasses, watch, jewelry, credit cards, dentures, hearing aids, wigs (removable hair extensions), and any other metallic objects on your body.

Depending on which body part is being scanned, you may need to put on a gown. The dressing rooms are private and only you have they key for the secure storage area in that dressing room. Prior to the MRI technologist taking you into the scan room, you will be asked if you want certain music, or you can bring in your own CD. The MRI technologist will then situate you on the MRI table. Once positioned, the technologist will then step into the control area, all the while staying in contact with you both visually and through an intercom.

As the exam proceeds, the MRI technologist will keep you apprised of the amount of time for each sequence, and you’ll hear a muffled thumping sound. Relax and try to lie as still as possible and let your mind enjoy the music. Before you know it, the exam will be over!
